Background to Position
The Dean: Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences is the executive head of the faculty. S/he will provide academic leadership and management to the faculty with respect to teaching-learning, research and community engagement and service learning, across all campuses, consistent with the University’s vision and mission. The dean is a member of Senate and reports to the Vice-Rector: Academic.

Job Description
Duties and responsibilities:
- Functioning as the executive head of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.
- Providing academic leadership and management to the faculty with respect to teaching-learning, research and community engagement and service learning, across all campuses.
- Accepting responsibility for resource management (including talent management) to achieve the planned strategic and teaching, research and engaged scholarship goals of the faculty and University.
- Promoting the faculty nationally and internationally through external liaison and partnership forming at provincial, national and international level, inter alia with universities, the corporate world, industries, authorities, professional bodies, alumni, parents and interest groups.
- Managing the well-being of staff and students.
- Participating actively in institution building and promoting of institutional transformation.
- Managing, with the assistance of the Division of Finance, the faculty’s finances effectively and transparently.
- Consulting with the Vice-Rector: Academic, the Vice-Rector: Research and the Vice-Rector: Institutional Change, Strategic Partnership and Societal Impact, with the assistance of the support divisions reporting to the respective Vice-Rectors, to ensure that the academic project is delivered effectively and is of a high quality.
- Establishing a thriving culture of research and innovation in the faculty.
Inherent Criteria
Inherent requirements:
- A doctoral degree on NQF Level 10 in any discipline of Economic and Management Sciences.
- A minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant experience in the tertiary-education sector, of which five (5) years must be in a senior and strategic leadership position.
- An established academic leader and scholar with an excellent publication and research record at a level that attracts respect and credibility from within the University, national and international scholars and other relevant external bodies.
- Eligibility for appointment as professor at the University of the Free State.
