Statistics is a professional discipline and is practiced through research and research-related consulting activities. Statistical consultation for research is offered by the Department to all academic and administrative staff of the University of Pretoria, as well as masters and doctoral students. Statistical and data science solutions are also offered to industry.
Technology significantly transformed the availability of information and data, and how advanced analytics allows for an in-depth understanding of patterns in data, making automation of many manual processes possible. Statistical consultation should offer the latest analytical methodology and modern Statistical thinking. This solution should be articulated in a broad and well understandable framework alluding to the required skills to facilitate the solution.
Job Description
It will be expected of the successful candidate to:
conduct independent statistical analysis and to assist doctoral, master’s degree students and UP staff with the statistical aspects of their academic research;
do consultations and implementation with respect to experimental design, questionnaire design, statistical software, analysis methodology, advanced analytics, results interpretation;
present innovative, creative thinking ability, especially within modern statistical practice, proactively present new ideas on expanding industry partnerships, and provide modern statistical and data science solutions to partners.
Inherent Criteria
A Master’s degree in Statistics or Mathematical Statistics, that include a credit bearing research dissertation and credit bearing course work consisting of core components which aligns with the required responsibilities of the incumbent.
At least three years’ advanced experience with:
Statistical consultation and practice.
Software programming and data management across different operating system platforms;
Data aggregation, manipulation and analysis of data;
The application of (an array of) statistical techniques (supervised and unsupervised learning modelling).
MINIMUM/ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES, (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE) IN SPECIFIC AREAS OF EXPERTISE:
Presenting of workshops on Statistics practice, including topics on statistical research methods and design; Mentor and guide inexperience statisticians with statistical consultation practices;
Managing and guiding master students/team members in completing statistical consultation projects;
Demonstrate advanced knowledge of at least one of the statistical software programming language SAS, R, Python or SPSS;
Demonstrate ability to automate and streamline the workflow of consultation projects;
Experience in building client specific solutions using relevant statistical techniques.
PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE) SPECIFIC AREAS OF EXPERTISE OR EXPERIENCE:
- The ability to work accurately under pressure;
- Good interpersonal and communication skills;
- Good time management, planning and organising skills;
- The ability to work concurrently on multiple projects;
- The ability to think analytically and laterally.
Application Requirement
Recent advances in computational ecosystems and statistical software packages requires the incumbent in this position to ensure that his/her expertise match the challenges of various research staff members at the University of Pretoria. It is expected that the successful candidate shall demonstrate these skills as well as the ability to continually develop him/herself in this field.
Therefore, it would be a requirement of potential candidates to participate in a practical simulated evaluation, to demonstrate such skills.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
