Job Description
The incumbents will be required to:
Teach relevant Mercantile Law subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Department of Mercantile Law has specific needs in the following areas:
- Law of Negotiable Instruments;
- Insurance Law;
- Credit Law;
- Consumer Protection Law; and
- Commercial Law;
- Conduct academic and scholarly research in pursuit of the Faculty’s research objectives;
- Supervise students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and
- Perform other academic duties as may be required by the Head of Department.
Inherent Criteria
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
- An LLM in any of the above listed areas of need in the Department of Mercantile Law;
- Relevant teaching or tutoring experience at a tertiary educational institution;
- At least two peer reviewed or DHET accredited publications in the last three years;
- Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and/or teaching will be to the candidate’s advantage;
- Relevant academic administration experience.
Senior Lecturer:
- A Doctorate in any of the above listed areas of need in the Department of Mercantile Law;
- At least five year’s tertiary teaching experience, which includes curriculum development and transformation as strong recommendations;
- At least eight peer reviewed or DHET accredited publications, of which at least three should have been published in the last three years;
- Conference papers presented at national or international conferences;
- Successful supervision of at least two research master’s degrees or four coursework master’s mini-dissertations;
- Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and/or teaching;
- Proven record of academic administration and academic citizenship. This could include the following:
- Participation in departmental committees;
- Participation in Faculty committees;
- Journal review and editing.

Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team;
Appropriate communication skills.
An in-depth understanding of specialisation to enable the development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field;
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
Lecturer:
A doctorate or advanced progress with doctoral studies will be to the candidate’s advantage.
PLEASE NOTE: All shortlisted applicants will be required to prepare a ten-minute presentation on a scholarly research topic that they have recently worked on or are working on as part of the selection process.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
