Background to Position

The Department of Internal Medicine invites suitably qualified Joint staff interested in being part of a dynamic, growing academic department, to apply for the post of academic head of department. Job Description

Duties:

·               The incumbent is responsible for managing all academic activities in the Department of Internal Medicine, including undergraduate and postgraduate training of students and

·               academic development of all staff

·               Strengthen undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research.

·               Monitor and report on the adequacy and appropriate standard of teaching.

·               Monitor and report on the adequacy and appropriate standard of research throughput

·               Promote staff development and manage staff performance and assessment within the department.

·               Work with Divisional heads to strengthen the academic endeavor, as well as ensure sound financial and personnel management

·               Work closely with Clinical Heads to encourage collaboration between clinical departments working across the teaching platforms.       

·               Set norms and standards for the maintenance of service delivery and quality outputs in the Department of Internal Medicine.

·               Further the mission and vision of the School of Clinical Medicine and the Department of Internal Medicine.  

·               The awarding of the title Professor/Associate Professor/Adjunct Professor will  depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications, research and other academic criteria as determined by the faculty guidelines.

Inherent Criteria

Qualifications:

·               A minimum qualification as a specialist physician (FCP or MMED), PhD would be advantageous.

·               At least 5 years of experience

·               Teaching and Research experience

·               The applicant must have excellent leadership, interpersonal and managerial skills and should have attained sufficient academic and       professional standing to command the

·               respect of the members of the Department.

·               The candidate must be a fulltime employee within Wits Teaching platform (& Joint staff) and a member of the Department of Internal Medicine.
