Background to Position
Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) offers professional health sciences training and education in a range of fields through excellence in teaching, learning, innovative research and community engagement. SMU is situated in Ga-Rankuwa (North of Pretoria) and the following position(s) is/are currently available:
The School of Medicine is looking for an energetic individual with meticulous attention to detail who will be responsible for teaching, learning and research within the Department of Anatomy and Histology. The incumbent will report to the HOD: Anatomy, and must meet the requirements, competencies and be responsible for the key performance areas below.
Job Description
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Formal instruction in the undergraduate and postgraduate Medical, Dental, Science and Health Care Science students in Gross Anatomy, Histology, Neuro-Anatomy and Embryology, as well as conducting practicals
- Supervise postgraduate students
- Co-ordinate undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
- Develop undergraduate and post graduate modules, and perform individual research
- Participate in departmental research activities
- Publish research articles in SAPSE accredited journals and present papers at scientific conferences
- Act as a research project leader and conduct appropriate research independently or in collaboration with colleagues within the university in line with University’s strategic objectives
- Contribute to the overall development of SMU and actively improve institutional culture
- Perform any other academic and research duties as maybe assigned by the HOD and/or Dean of School
Inherent Criteria
REQUIREMENTS:
Senior Lecturer
- PhD in Anatomy
- A full Anatomy course (Gross anatomy, Histology and Embryology) should have been covered at undergraduate level
- At least three (3) years’ experience in postgraduate teaching of Anatomy courses
- Experience in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Evidence of at least three (3) publications in SAPSE accredited journals in Anatomy or any field of Medicine or Dentistry
- Evidence of successful curriculum development and academic management
- Experience in managing research programs and postgraduate student supervision
- Experience in development and reviewing of research proposals
Lecturer
- Masters degree in Anatomy
- A full anatomy course (Gross anatomy, Histology and Embryology) should have been covered at undergraduate level
- Equivalent degrees may be considered, provided Anatomy is a major course of the basic degree
- At least two (2) years’ experience teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Research publications will be an added advantage
- Knowledge of e-learning will be a strong recommendation
COMPETENCIES:
- Technical/professional knowledge and skills, with a sound knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, Internet and competency of ITS
- Experience in navigating online platforms such as BlackBoard Collaborate, Zoom and/or Microsoft Teams
- Good writing, communication and presentation skills
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- Good interpersonal and relationship building skills
