Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) offers professional health sciences training and education in a range of fields through excellence in teaching, learning, innovative research and community engagement. SMU is situated in Ga- Rankuwa (North of Pretoria) and the following position(s) is/are currently available:

The University seeks an individual with the requisite academic profile to take responsibility for Teaching, Learning, Research, Community Engagement, Academic Management, Curriculum Development and Quality Assurance in the Department of Public Health at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. He/she will report to the Head of Department (HOD) and must meet the requirements and competencies and be responsible for the key performance areas below 

Job Description

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • The candidate will head the Health System Management and Policy in the Department of Public Health and will be responsible for teaching, research, community engagement and administrative activities
  • Provide a learning environment that encourages and supports student success
  • Curriculum design and development of teaching and learning materials
  • Develop, direct, and teach post graduate courses related to public health, health systems, and public health policy using blended learning approaches
  • Lead collaboration with academics in the Department in the development and implementation of new educational programs in issues related to Health systems and public health policy
  • Direct student research and serve as a research mentor to masters and doctoral students and junior faculty with interests in health policy and the public health system
  • Publish high-impact research in public health, policy, health systems and related health fields
  • Engage in community activities and develop partnerships with the public health sector, community, and relevant industry
  • Serve on department, school, and university committees
  • Represent the Department at disciplinary conferences and gatherings

Inherent Criteria

REQUIREMENTS:

Associate Professor

  • A Doctoral Degree in Public Health or Health Care related field. In case of Doctoral Degree in Health related field, the candidate should have a Master’s Degree in Public Health
  • Experience and demonstrated track record of excellence in teaching both introductory and advanced level courses in Health Systems Management, Public Health, and Health Policy
  • At least five to seven (7) years of postgraduate teaching of Public Health courses or a closely health related discipline
  • Three (3) years relevant academic management and leadership
  • An outstanding academic publication record in public health and health related discipline with evidence of at least five (5) academic publications in Public Health/Health Systems/Health Management or a closely health related discipline
  • Evidence of successful curriculum development and academic management
  • Prior experience in mentoring and supervising postgraduate and doctoral students
  • Demonstrated record to develop and review research proposals for Masters and Doctoral projects

Professor

  • A Doctoral Degree in Public Health or Health Care related field. In case of Doctoral Degree in Health related field, the candidate should have a Master’s Degree in Public Health
  • Experience and demonstrated track record of excellence in teaching both introductory and advanced level courses in Health Systems Management, Public Health, and Health Policy
  • At least eight (8) to ten (10) years of postgraduate teaching of Public Health courses or a closely health related discipline
  • Five (5) years relevant academic management and leadership
  • An outstanding academic publication record in public health and health related discipline with evidence of at least ten (10) academic publications in Public Health/Health Systems/Health Management or a closely health related discipline
  • Evidence of successful curriculum development and academic management
  • Prior experience in mentoring and supervising postgraduate and doctoral students
  • Demonstrated record to develop and review research proposals for Masters and Doctoral projects
