Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) offers professional health sciences training and education in a range of fields through excellence in teaching, learning, innovative research and community engagement. SMU is situated in Ga-Rankuwa (North of Pretoria) and the following position(s) is/are currently available:

The Department of Library and Information Services is looking for an energetic individual with meticulous attention to detail who will be managing, planning, organizing, leading, and reviewing operational activities in the Client Services section. The incumbent will report to the HOD, and must meet the requirements, competencies and be responsible for the key performance areas below.

Job Description

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Actively support the Director: Library Services to ensure the effective implementation of the University’s vision, mission and values by implementing Library strategic objectives
  • Provide input for Library Services strategy development
  • Plan and manage/supervise the Client Services operations including, membership, patron records, circulation, reserve collection, duty rosters
  • Plan library services for SMU clinical training sites
  • Ensure a safe environment for all staff and users in the Library
  • Policy development and review
  • Review and update client services procedures manual
  • Update library rules and regulations for publication
  • Participate in Management, maintenance and evaluation of the Library collections
  • Participate in student programmes including the open day programme for prospective students and orientation for first year students
  • Participate in the development of the virtual Library services
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection process for filling positions
  • Take responsibility for performance agreements for staff
  • Manage staff training, development, coaching and mentoring
  • Maintain communication with the University community
  • Representing SMU library on library committees and task teams as required
  • Ensure appropriate promotional activities are initiated and implemented and evaluated
  • Conduct client surveys
  • Monitoring, evaluation and reporting to inform decision making, including trend analysis and implementation of best practice
  • Contribute to the overall objectives of SMU and actively improve institutional culture
  • Carry out other functions as may be required by the Director

Inherent Criteria

REQUIREMENTS

  • An Honours degree in Library Science and Information Science
  • At least ten (10) years’ experience as a Librarian in an academic institution, a research organisation
  • Three (3) years’ experience at management or supervisory level
  • Experience in navigating online platforms such as Black Board Collaborate, Zoom and/or Microsoft Teams
  • Demonstrable understanding of Client Services
  • Development of collaborative partnerships

  • Technical/professional knowledge and skills, with a sound knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, Internet and competency of ITS
