Job Description
Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas
The Centre for Transformative Regulation of Work was established at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) Law Faculty in November 2020. It represents a consolidation of initiatives undertaken in the area of labour and social security law, starting with the establishment of the Social Law Project in 1993, with its research focus on (a) how the law should respond to the changes taking place in the world of work under the impact of transformative technological and structural change, and (b) sustainable forms of worker protection in this context based on principles of social justice and fundamental labour rights. The Centre is affiliated to the Labour Law Research Network and also draws on the expertise of an international network of distinguished research associates, practitioners as well as scholars, and partner institutions.
The successful candidate will serve as Director of the Centre in accordance with the University’s governance requirements. Supported by its administrative team, his/her central role will be to give leadership in the areas of research, resource mobilisation, coordination of activities, and project development. In doing so he/she will also pursue his/her research and publications within the Centre and its area of focus, teach primarily at postgraduate level and supervise primarily Master’s and Doctoral students.
The position thus offers an excellent opportunity for an established and motivated academic with the necessary background and experience to drive the ongoing growth of the Centre as an internationally-recognised centre of excellence.

· formulating a strategic vision and providing strong intellectual leadership
· providing overall leadership and management
· raising resources for new initiatives and initiating income-generating projects,
· ensuring a high public profile for the Centre
· academic administration
· curriculum development and assessment community engagement
Inherent Criteria
Minimum requirements - Professor:
· a Doctorate in Law, preferably in labour, employment or social security law
· significant experience in facilitating learning and teaching, preferably in labour, employment or social security law
· a significant record of quality peer-reviewed publications, preferably in labour, employment or social security law
· a significant record of successful postgraduate supervision, including doctoral supervision
· evidence of expertise, national standing, and international recognition in his/her field of research
· experience in generating research grants
Minimum requirements – Associate Professor:
· a Doctorate in Law, preferably in labour, employment or social security law
· significant experience in facilitating learning and teaching, preferably in labour, employment or social security law
· a significant record of quality peer reviewed publications, preferably in labour, employment or social security law
· a record of successful postgraduate supervision, including doctoral supervision
· evidence of expertise, national standing, and an international presence in his/her field of research
Required competencies:
· excellent managerial and leadership skills,
· sound interpersonal relations, with the ability to build partnerships and strategic working relationships,
· the ability to lead through vision and values to develop and promote academic excellence,
· coaching and mentoring skills
