Director of FSATI and ASIC
The job purpose is to contribute to the development and execution of the entities strategy through:
- Strategic and operational leadership in the development and management of the entities, within the strategic
- Frameworks of Government, the University and the FSATI Board, and in line with the objectives and priorities of the institution.
- Responsible for the strategic operational and financial sustainability of both FSATI and ASIC.
- Ensure the growth of the entities within South Africa, SADEC, Africa and Globally.
- Development of strategic collaborative partnerships, both locally and internationally, to expand the capabilities of the
- Centre and its opportunities;
- Create synergies within the Higher Education, Government and relevant industry sectors to create innovative space-based solutions to societal needs for the sustainable socio-economic development of Africa.
- Development, create and transfer knowledge through by creating intellectual property.
- Lecture on Masters in Satellite programme
Job Description
The person will be expected to operate at the Professorial level:
- Develop and lead research and innovation in FSATI/ASIC
- Successful recruitment and supervision of postgraduate students
- Strengthen collaborations and successful research external funding
- Contribute to teaching & learning, research & innovation, and community engagement.
- Incorporate research outcomes into the academic project.
- Lecture on Masters in Satellite programme
Inherent Criteria
Director FSATI Minimum Requirements:
- Doctoral Degree in Engineering (Electrical/Electronic/Computer/related).
- At least 6 years' experience in a leadership and management capacity (Institute/Centre/Department) in the higher education sector or leadership and management in a relevant industry or a combination of the two.
- Successful supervision of Master’s and Doctoral students.
- A track record of accredited and peer-reviewed publications.
- Successful track record of external national and international funding
- Recognised as an international leader in research and innovation.
- Substantive knowledge of and experience of the Space Industry in South Africa.
- A track record of having successfully written, negotiated and concluded funding proposals.
- Experience in reporting to external funders.
- Established contacts within the Space industry and in associated government and non-governmental organisations.
- The selection panel’s recommendation and assessment will be aligned with the institution’s promotion criteria for the Professorial level and reserves the right to appoint at the Associate Professorial level). The successful candidate will be expected to be NRF rated or become rated within a reasonable period of up to 3 years after appointment.

- Exposure to Space industry on the continent and the international space industry
- Experience in the development of training and education programmes.
Application Requirement
Key performance Areas/Principal Accountabilities:
- Provide strategic direction and leadership.
- Be accountable for the management and operations of FSATI/ASIC.
- Direct strategy towards the profitable growth and operation of FSATI/ASIC.
- Sound financial management and accountability, with a clear plan for the sustainability of the entities.
- Closely monitor the operating and financial results against plans and budgets.
- Put in place adequate operational planning and financial control systems.
- Seek and negotiate new business and funding opportunities.
- Identify strategic partnerships, collaborations and affiliations.
- Negotiate agreements with relevant stakeholders
- Represent CPUT/FSATI/ASIC to major customers and professional associations.
- Report to CPUT internal structures and CPUT management.
- Report to all relevant external stakeholders and funders.
- Develop strategic operating plans that reflect long-term objectives and priorities.
- Take remedial action where necessary and inform CPUT senior management of significant changes.
- Build and maintain an effective motivated team that delivers on time.
- Attract, supervise and ensure the success of postgraduate students.
- Academic Teaching and Learning: be involved in teaching and learning and all related activities in the department, faculty and institution.
- Research and Innovation: Lead; be involved in; and develop research and innovation in the research entities, department, faculty and institution.
- Academic administration: Be involved and contribute to all required academic administration in the department and faculty.
- Quality assurance: Assist, contribute and be involved in preparing or all quality assurance related activities both internally and externally to the department, faculty and institution.
- Involvement in departmental, faculty and Institutional administration and structures.
- Involvement, contribution and promotion of community participation and linkages outreach.
- Engaging with relevant stakeholders internally and external to the institution.
- Apply for and attract external funding for postgraduate studies; research and innovation
