Campus/ Location
Bellville Campus - Bellville, Cape Town, WC ZA (Primary)
Job Purpose:
The incumbent will assume technical leadership of the research, development and innovation activities of the Africa Space Innovation Centre (ASIC). The Centre, hosted by the French South African Institute of Technology, is a flagship entity within the CPUT Space Science and Technology Focus Area. The purpose of ASIC is to transition technologies resulting from basic and applied research conducted in the postgraduate programmes into industry-ready product prototypes within an ‘agile aerospace’ environment. ASIC develops nano-satellite missions and technology. The incumbent will interface with key cross-functional groups and stakeholders (internal and external) as well as manage the technical team, roadmap and resources of ASIC towards the establishment of a world-class nano-satellite development facility.
Job Description
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities:
- Responsible as technical leader of ASIC.
- Manage all technological aspects of ASIC to ensure synergy between the postgraduate and innovation phases of the broader CPUT Focus Area in Space Science and Technology.
- Define, implement, and maintain a research and technology roadmap that evolves with the fast changing nano-satellite industry and drives an ‘agile aerospace’ approach to mission development.
- Manage the technical programme of ASIC within allocated budget; prepare funding applications to ensure annual alignment of ASIC’s budget and resources.
- Ensure the professional development of an engineering team and mentoring towards professional registration.
- Engage and maintain constructive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to promote growth of ASIC (i.e., promote research and technology innovation).
- Implement and manage a Quality Management system within the ‘agile aerospace’ paradigm to ensure product compliance with functional, manufacturing and qualification testing specifications and guidelines, and adherence to the existing documentation control system; resolve any conflicts between project commitments and functional requirements.
- Interpret customer or user requirements to create product specifications.
- Establishment of state-of-the-art infrastructure to support the CPUT Focus Area in Space Science and Technology.
- Lead all phases of the satellite development life cycle, including assembly, integration and testing of the satellites.
- Technical advisor to postgraduate research projects.
- Maintain ethical and professional codes.
- Ensure compliance with Health, Safety & Environmental (SHE) responsibilities.
Competencies:
- Leading cross-disciplinary design teams in a technology research, development and innovation environment.
- Managing and developing complex product development & certification.
- Systems and subsystems level engineering experience with a demonstrable competency and appreciation of ‘agile aerospace’.
- Research acumen and proven research output.
- Professional standing.
- Innovative and ‘out of the box’ thinking.
- Well developed, detail oriented organisational skills.
- Project and financial management skills.
- Strong interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work with management to set and achieve goals based on priorities of development projects and support of internal and external customers.
- The ability to manage several simultaneous projects is a requirement.
- Excellent communication skills and command of the English language
Inherent Criteria
Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- A Master’s degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or related qualification.
- A minimum of 5 years’ post-qualification experience in the high reliability technology industry, with demonstrable evidence of operational project involvement (design, build, test, commission) as well as leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Proven systems level experience and a deep operational understanding of the small (micro/nano) satellite industry is desirable, but experience in a rapid product development life cycle environment that will facilitate fresh and innovative approaches to ‘agile aerospace’ is of key importance.
Recommendation
- Experience with technology maturation and transfer is recommended.
- Experience in a research and innovation environment at the interface between academia and industry is recommended.
- Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa
- Doctorate in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
