Job Description

The Vice-Chancellor & Principal is the Chief Executive Officer of the university and reports to the University Council.

Implement the policies of the University Council and to ensure that the University’s resources are used in ways that most effectively advance the approved mission and strategic plan of the University

To provide strategic direction, effective administration and operational management, financial sustainability, and support to the University on academic and support services matters.

To provide direction, support and assistance to Council on all governance issues and the business needs of the institution.

Inherent Criteria

  • PhD/Doctorate complemented by a management qualification or equivalent
  • 10-15 years of experience in higher education, of which senior management of no less than 10-12 years has been your standout feature

  • Academic teaching experience with evidence of excellence in research and teaching
  • Accredited scholarly publications
  • Academic credibility as recognised by peers and the business environment
  • Extensive knowledge in areas of leadership / strategy / management / research

DESIRED QUALIFICATION/ KNOWLEDGE AND/OR EXPERIENCE

In addition to a Doctorate, a qualification in management, or equivalent

  • NRF-Rating of at least a “C”
  • Member of a relevant professional body
  • Preference will be given to Employment Equity candidates, particularly women.
  • Should have a good understanding of and experience in change management implementation.
  • Must be a visionary who can think strategically and turn ideas into action, particularly in the context of the 2030 ‘Vision’ statement (paper).
  • Must be able to mobilise and inspire others towards shared goals
  • Must have the ability to network and form partnerships with government, industry, business and similar stakeholders
  • Must have excellent and effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must have demonstrable and unquestionable integrity, standing and accomplishments relevant to a tertiary institution, inclusive of excellent communication skills, public speaking ability, critical and analytical skills, a quick, decisive and participative management style and the ability and willingness to respond to difficult situationsas they arise.
