It seeks to recruit and appoint a suitable qualified and experienced candidate for the above-mentioned permanent position. The department aims to strengthen teaching and learning in Speech-Language Pathology Program and is committed to the capacitation and strengthening of the department and the program of speech-language pathology.

The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) aims to build capacity towards the establishment of permanent academic posts in the Department. Successful candidates will participate in a 6-year comprehensive development and induction programme, after which they will continue as a regular member of the academic staff

Job Description

To be eligible for an nGAP position, applicants must meet the following criteria in addition to meeting the criteria specified by the university:

  • show an interest in becoming an academic 
  • be 40 years or younger
  • show evidence of eligibility to undertake postgraduate study at a doctoral level
  • be willing to commit to placement at the appointing university for the full 6 years of the programme
  • must have obtained at least an average of 70% at Masters level (coursework and or dissertation)

  • Must be willing to register and complete a PhD within three years of taking up the position.

    This is a developmental position and the incumbent is expected to obtain a Doctorate within the first five years of appointment.

    The candidate is also expected to undertake and participate in professional development in teaching and learning, in the higher education context.


    • Research in Speech-Language Pathology including research in an area of expertise
    • Generating research output in accredited journal and presenting papers at conferences
    • Research supervision of Undergraduate 4th year students
    • Teaching of modules in Speech Language Pathology including preparing and delivering lectures and seminars, initiate and develop study guides and teTeaching of modules in Speech Language Pathology including preparing and delivering lectures and seminars, initiate and develop study guides and teaching material, manage the teaching and assessment plans of modules and consult with students.
    • Clinical Supervision- of Speech Pathology students in areas of specialty
    • Community engagement – such as involvement in and the initiation of sustainable community engagement initiatives.
    • Administration – including day-to-day administrative duties related to the program of Speech-Language Pathology and academic programs as well as participate in Departmental and Faculty committees.


    Inherent Criteria


    • A Masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
    • A valid professional registration with HPCSA as a Speech Therapist
    • At least three (3) clinical practice in the field of Speech Therapy
    • Experience in clinical supervision or mentoring


    Applicants have to demonstrate in their applications:

    • An in-depth knowledge of their relevant subject fields in Speech Therapy and evidence of on-going practice.
    • Independence and evidence of academic standing in a field of specialization
    • Ability to take initiative in research.
    • Computer competency in the Microsoft bouquet, use of ICT in the higher education context
    • Knowledge of online teaching and learning platforms (such as Blackboard etc.) and its application to teaching, learning and research.
    • An ability to lecture or at least must have shared profession specific knowledge in a group of people. large and smaller post-graduate classes.
    • Effective communication skills and public speaking experience.
    • Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
    • A high level of professional and ethical conduct.
