Background to Position
A postdoctoral fellowship aids in building the research career of a postdoctoral fellow to conduct independent research, publish their research outcomes, and apply for funding / grants.
The primary purpose of this postdoctoral fellowship is to conduct research on the theory and practice of Internationalisation of Higher Education and Comparative and International Education, and to publish the findings in accredited journals.
Job Description
The RF will also be responsible for:
- the development of the unit’s internationalisation database, data collection ethics applications, and writing of manuscripts for academic publications.
- Writing grant applications.
- Contributing to the development of the research portfolio in the Office for International Affairs
The successful candidate will work under the mentorship of a senior academic on various aspects of internationalisation of higher education and its broader societal context.
S/he will be expected to work with colleagues in the Office for International Affairs at the UFS, as well as with local and international experts, to contribute to successful projects with a strong impact on the field, the practice, and society.
Inherent Criteria
- Excellent English academic writing skills
- Experience in research proposal development and ethics application requirements
- Advanced computer skills
- Portfolio in academic writing with at least three academic papers published in journals
- Comprehensive and diverse Social Sciences research skills

The principal purpose of the Office for International Affairs (OIA) is to enable internationalisation at the UFS. It renders strategic advice on internationalisation and supports the international activities of internal UFS stakeholders. It supports international partnerships, internationalisation at home activities, international degree students and student exchanges, and also contributes to scholarship in the field through researching internationalisation. Among other things, the office focuses on
- advancing scholarship of internationalisation;
- facilitating international partnerships and advice to internal stakeholders on partnership processes;
- providing specialised services to international students, and ensuring their compliance with relevant legislation;
- providing practical and emotional support to international students;
- structuring co-curricular internationalisation at home activities, such as cultural diversity celebrations and activities supporting the social integration of international students;
- reporting on internationalisation and creating an institutional narrative of internationalisation;
- liaising with various external stakeholders, i.e., government, embassies in South Africa, science councils, and funding agencies; and
- coordinating international projects.
