A vacancy exists in a strong teaching and research team in Geotechnical Engineering at Stellenbosch University, in an environment with a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

This appointment is aimed at supporting this research area and to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the areas of Geotechnical Engineering.

Job Description

Duties:

  • Teaching and developing undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the areas of Geotechnical Engineering;
  • Conducting research in the area of Geotechnical Engineering;
  • Supervision of postgraduate students in Geotechnical Engineering;
  • Generating support and funds in the Geotechnical Engineering research group;
  • Academic and departmental administration.

Inherent Criteria

Job Requirements:

Junior Lecturer:

  • An applicable BEng or BScEng degree enabling professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA);
  • A background in Geotechnical Engineering / Materials Engineering / Mining Engineering, with a focus on geotechnical structures, soil mechanics or geoinformatics;
  • An excellent academic study record;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
  • The incumbent must qualify to register for a PhD in Civil Engineering at the latest in    2024 and graduate within four years.

Lecturer:

  • An applicable BEng or BScEng degree enabling professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA);
  • A background in Geotechnical Engineering, with a Doctorate degree in a relevant engineering field or an MEng/MSc degree combined with a minimum of three years' industry experience, with a 
  • focus on geotechnical structures, soil mechanics or geoinformatics;
  • An excellent academic study record in Engineering;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Senior Lecturer:

  • An applicable BEng or BScEng degree enabling professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA);
  • A background in Geotechnical Engineering, with a Doctorate degree in a relevant engineering field or an MEng/MSc degree combined with a minimum of eight years¿ industry experience,
  • with a focus on geotechnical structures, soil mechanics or geoinformatics;
  • A research track record demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications or postgraduate supervision;
  • An excellent academic study record in Engineering;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Recommendation:

  • Registration as a candidate or professional engineer with ECSA;
  • Previous tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level;
