The Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University has a well-established Mechanics Division with research groups in structural-mechanics,materials engineering, optimisation and vibration. This appointment is aimed at supporting one or more of these research areas and teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the areas of strength of materials, material science, vibration, or optimisation.

Job Description

Duties:

  • With specific reference to the abovementioned research fields of structural-mechanics, materials engineering, optimisation and vibration:
  • Teaching and developing undergraduate and postgraduate modules in at least one of the abovementioned areas;
  • Conducting research in in at least one of the abovementioned areas;
  • Supervision of postgraduate students in in at least one of the abovementioned areas;
  • Providing support and fundraising for research in in at least one of the abovementioned areas.
  • Rendering service to industry through specialist consulting.

Inherent Criteria

Job Requirements:

  • A relevant doctoral degree, plus at least three years' applicable practical, teaching and/or research experience; OR an applicable master's degree in engineering with
  • at least eight years' applicable technical or management experience in industry;
  • If not yet in possession of a doctoral degree, a commitment to enrol for a doctoral degree within three years of employment;
  • An ECSA accredited BEng or BSc(Eng) degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent;
  • The ability to teach either strength of materials or materials science at an undergraduate level;
  • Sound communication and teaching skills;
  • Proficiency in English with the ability to function effectively in a multi-lingual environment;
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills.

Recommendations:

  • Evaluation by the NRF as a rated researcher;
  • A good research record in structural mechanics, materials engineering, optimisation, vibration, condition monitoring, applied machine learning or additive manufacturing and proven fundraising in any of these areas;
  • Demonstrating regular contact with industry through either specialist consulting, contract research, industry visits, or other significant modes of interaction;
  • PrEng registration or equivalent.
