Appointment is on the joint establishment of Stellenbosch University and the Western Cape Government Health on the conditions of service of the University.

Job Description

Duties:

  • Reporting through the Executive Head: Surgical Sciences, to the Chief Executive Officer: Tygerberg Hospital, and the Dean: Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the incumbent's duties will include:
  • Overall strategic leadership and operational management of the Division of General Surgery on behalf of the Faculty and Tygerberg Hospital, giving expression to its vision of becoming a world-class centre for training, teaching and learning, clinical service, research and innovation in Surgery;
  • Fostering an inclusive and collegial environment that encourages a high level of performance, communication and teamwork;
  • Operational management of human resources and finances of the Division;
  • Directing and participating in clinical service delivery of the Division, including commuted overtime at Tygerberg Hospital;
  • Overall academic responsibility for teaching and learning which includes supervision of undergraduate students in Surgery across the Faculty's distributed training platform;
  • Overall responsibility for research and innovation which includes leading, mentoring and participating in the design, execution, supervision of postgraduate students, publication and translation of research in priority areas, and fostering research collaboration with other Divisions and Departments;
  • Collaborating with the other facilities that constitute the Western Cape tertiary health services platform;
  • Actively participating in the internationalisation efforts of the University;
  • Contributing to the goals and functioning of the University and Western Cape Government Health through active involvement in the relevant management structures of the University and the Western Cape Government;
  • Expanding and strengthening collaboration with health services, communities, and other stakeholders.

Inherent Criteria

Job Requirements:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Surgery, which includes a relevant MMed degree and FCS(SA) or equivalent;
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Specialist in General Surgery;
  • Teaching, clinical training and examining experience in General Surgery or one of its subspecialities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Experience in conducting research and postgraduate research supervision; 
  • Proven national and international recognition as a specialist or subspecialist in General Surgery.

Recommendations:

  • PhD;
  • Experience of interaction with service, teaching and/or professional bodies at national and international levels;
  • Understanding of the South African Higher Education environment.
