The Librarian: Information Services will be part of the UFH Libraries’ Information and Learning Services on East London Campus. Basically, serving as a faculty liaison librarian for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities; and other faculties as may be deemed necessary. The incumbent is responsible for information and learning services offered virtually through the library website and other contemporary students’ communication channels and in the physical library spaces. The incumbent should have profound knowledge of information literacy for the digital age; and experience in training library users for advanced scholarship and digital competencies.  S/he must be a client focused individual aiming at meeting the dynamic information needs of a heterogeneous user community and ensuring its satisfaction. S/he will be performing continuous information needs analysis of undergraduate and postgraduate students to recommend essential information resources; and demonstrating value of library information and service to the designated faculties. S/he must operate optimally to meet diverse and dynamic user needs striving to support students with different learning styles while also maintaining a safe, secure and hygienic environment. The position requires a big heart and generosity to be accommodating; and prepared to navigate the complexities of working within a collaborative library environment.  There is a need to be adaptable with a positive outlook and interest in user experiences and information needs in general.

Job Description

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead, manage and contribute towards innovative learning, teaching and research support services in the designated faculties.
  • Provide variety of library and information services in discipline specific areas for academics, postgraduates and undergraduates; including assessment of the use of information resources.
  • Advance contemporary scholarship and digital competence through information literacy for the digital age trainings virtually and physically.
  • Develop and maintain library information resource collections through collection analysis for relevance in the transforming curricula including conducting literature surveys to prepare for new offerings in the designated faculties.
  • Market and promote library resources, services and initiatives; and demonstrate value in the designated faculties.
  • Manage the library resources and infrastructure as a hybrid learning and research environment. 

Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge of academic library and information service policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of information and learning services for hybrid learning environments.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of user information needs and academic information services for the digital age.
  • Knowledge of collection analysis for relevance in new programmes and transforming curricula.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of ICT practices, applications and tools in the academic and research library space.
  • Experience and understanding of marketing and promoting library services in a university environment.

Inherent Criteria

Minimum requirements:

  • B Bibl Degree or equivalent LIS qualification.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in an academic library information and learning service.
  • Proven competency (e.g transcript, certificate) on information literacy for the digital age.
