Background to Position
The Department of Molecular & Cell Biology conducts research that is of economic, medical, environmental and social importance to Africa. Research areas include evolution, environmental adaptation, microbiology, and health and disease of humans, animals and plants. The department offers majors in Biochemistry and Genetics at undergraduate level, and an Honours course in Molecular Biology. We recognise the ever-increasing importance of bioinformatics in our field and wish to increase our research and teaching capacity in this area to allow us to maintain research competitiveness and offer a modern molecular biology curriculum in our undergraduate and Honours courses, and graduate research training.
We invite applications for a Senior Lectureship post in the field of Bioinformatics, in the Molecular & Cell Biology Department, Faculty of Science.
Job Description
Responsibilities:
- Develop and teach bioinformatics and other modules in the MCB undergraduate and Honours courses;
- Supervise Honours, Masters and Doctoral students;
- Establish and maintain a productive research group and attract independent research funding;
- Establish collegiate collaborations within departmental research groups;
- Contribute positively to the normal departmental and faculty administrative tasks.
Inherent Criteria
Requirements for the job:
- A PhD in the field of bioinformatics in the context of any area of molecular biology;
- At least two years of relevant postdoctoral experience;
- A track record of published research outputs in bioinformatics;
- Proven lab bench expertise in molecular biology;
- Demonstrated ability to secure external research funding;
- Teaching experience at undergraduate level, with evidence of prior contribution to curriculum development;
- Successful supervision of post-graduate students at Honours, Masters and/or PhD level;
- Demonstrated ability to code and experience in the de novo assembly and analysis of genomes/transcriptomes and/or quantitative proteomics.
