The Associate Professor is a prominent research leader with an outstanding track-record and is expected to be supervising research/higher level post-graduate students.

Job Description

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • Programme leadership, which entails performing management, administrative and coordination responsibilities of the Journalism programme.
  • Contribute towards development and implementation of Walter Sisulu University's teaching and learning strategy.
  • Contribute towards development and implementation of Walter Sisulu University's teaching and learning Faculty Research Strategy.
  • Research fundraising and stewardship to donors.
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Academic administration.
  • Develop student-centre teaching methodologies.
  • Participate in planned and regular schedules of evaluative surveys.
  • Build community engagement activities into the curriculum.
  • Academic student development.
  • Act as a study leader of student or lecturer study groups.
  • Membership in professional bodies.
  • Develop and implement strategies to use ICT for teaching and learning.
  • Act as external examiner for post-graduate thesis.
  • Coach/mentor new student supervisors.
  • Take responsibility for allocation of fair workloads.
  • Develop research projects and research capacity within the Faculty.

INHERENT CRITERIA:

  • Doctoral degree or PhD in Journalism.
  • Undergraduate and Masters degree in Journalism.
  • Minimum of 8 years teaching experience in a university (tertiary level).
  • Evidence of recent conference papers (must include both local and international conferences) and peer-reviewed publications in accredited journals (a minimum of 10 publications).
  • Evidence of supervision of completed research projects at master’s level.
  • Registration with relevant professional body/Registrable with South African professional body.  
  • Evidence of ability to attract external funds.
  • An NRF rating will be an added advantage.
