Senior Lecturer / Lecturer: Department of Mathematical Sciences

The Department of Mathematical Sciences in the Faculty of Science consists of three divisions: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. The Mathematics Division is responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Mathematics. Currently, the Mathematics research areas include Algebra, Algebraic Number Theory and Algebraic Geometry, Analytic Number Theory, Category Theory, Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms, Functional Analysis, Logic, Mathematical Biology, Mathematical Physics, and Topology.

Job Description

Duties:

  • Conducting active research and publication in peer-reviewed journals in an area that will strengthen the research profile of the Mathematics Division;
  • Recruiting and supervising postgraduate students;
  • Teaching and coordinating undergraduate and postgraduate Mathematics modules in Science and programmes in other faculties;
  • Securing research funding;
  • Participating in academically relevant departmental and faculty activities, as required.

Inherent Criteria

For appointment as Senior Lecturer:

  • PhD degree in Mathematics or a closely related field;
  • Evidence of recent research experience in an area that will strengthen the research profile of the Mathematics Division;
  • A growing research publication record in peer-reviewed journals and talks at national and international conferences;
  • Proven experience and commitment to teaching Mathematics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Successful postgraduate supervision or co-supervision, at least at master's level;
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English.

For appointment as Lecturer:

  • PhD degree (completed or submitted) in Mathematics or a closely related field;
  • An active research interest in an area that will strengthen the research profile of the Mathematics Division;
  • Evidence of research output in peer-reviewed journals or conference talks;
  • Teaching experience in Mathematics (as lecturer, or teaching assistant/tutor at tertiary level);
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to present a lecture on their recent research to demonstrate their knowledge and communication skills. 

Recommendation:

  • Postdoctoral research experience in academia.
