BACKGROUND TO POSITION:
Walter Sisulu University seeks a dynamic and transformational leader to provide intellectual and strategic leadership in Teaching and Learning and lead the evolution and growth of the teaching and learning project at WSU.
Reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning is specifically responsible for, inter alia, oversight of the academic project through the line management of Deans. This includes learning and teaching development as well as community engagement initiatives.
The appointed candidate will be an exceptional academic with proven senior leadership and management experience. The successful applicant is expected to have a thorough knowledge of the major trends and challenges impacting the higher education sector, familiarity with the national policy/administrative landscape, and an ability to work in an ever-changing environment. The incumbent will form part of the executive team responsible for providing strategic leadership and for overall operational management in the university.
Job Description
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Strategic leadership and management.
- Policy development and corporate governance.
- Intellectual direction and leadership with respect to teaching and learning.
- Curriculum development and transformation initiatives.
- Promotion of the scholarship of teaching and learning.
- Infusion of community engagement in learning and teaching.
- Line management of Deans of the faculties.
- Quality assurance and risk management.
- Resource Management: human resources, budget, and finance.
- Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.
Inherent Criteria
Qualifications:
- A Doctoral degree.
- Full or Associate Professor level.
Experience:
- A strong personal academic standing of teaching and research, demonstrated by peer recognition, publication, and a track record of major projects.
- At least 10 years’ experience in a senior leadership role at a Higher Education institution and proven capability in academic and intellectual leadership in a university.
- Strong familiarity with the quality assurance regulatory environment at national level (including CHE, SAQA, DHET).
- Can think strategically and operationalize this into plans and projects.
- A demonstrated record of managing a complex portfolio and associated administrative skills.
