Background to Position
The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cape Town seeks to appoint to its academic staff, at the level of Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor, a vascular plant biologist with expertise in evolutionary biology or systematics. The appointee should be able to teach across a range of topics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to supervise postgraduate student projects, in the broad area of plant evolutionary biology. They should have a proven track record of research in vascular plant evolution or systematics.
Job Description
Responsibilities:
- To contribute strongly to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses
- Develop an independent research programme with appropriate training and supervision of postgraduate students
- To contribute to administration at a rank-appropriate level
- To contribute to the well-being of the department
Inherent Criteria
Requirements for the job at Senior Lecturer Level:
- A PhD in plant biology
- Postdoctoral experience
- A good working knowledge of vascular plant diversity
- Evidence of teaching experience and content development at undergraduate level
- Evidence of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters or PhD level
- Evidence of a sustained track record of research outputs in high impact journals in plant evolutionary biology
- Evidence of active contribution to Department-level administration
Additional Requirements at Associate Professor Level: Evidence of:
- being an experienced and very good teacher
- innovation and involvement in academic development
- successful supervision at MSc and PhD levels
- Ability to attract research funding to support independent research.
- international recognition in plant evolutionary biology
- active contribution to Faculty and University-level administration
Advantageous:
- Experience and working knowledge of South African (especially the Greater Cape Floristic Region) vascular plant diversity
