The Department of Mathematical Sciences in the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University (SU) consists of three divisions: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. The Mathematics Division is responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Mathematics. Currently, the Mathematics research areas include Algebra, Algebraic Number Theory and Algebraic Geometry, Analytic Number Theory, Category Theory, Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms, Functional Analysis, Logic, Mathematical Biology, Mathematical Physics, and Topology.
The focus of this appointment is undergraduate teaching.
Job Description
Duties:
- Teaching a range of undergraduate mathematics modules offered as part of programmes in the Faculty of Science, as well as service modules in other faculties;
- Engaging with academic renewal of the curriculum, assessment and student support initiatives in undergraduate mathematics;
- Responsible for a significantly larger than normal undergraduate teaching and marking load;
- Teaching and coordinating undergraduate mathematics modules with large enrolments.
- Fulfilling administration duties in the Mathematics Division.
Inherent Criteria
Requirements:
- A PhD in mathematics or a closely related field, at the time of application;
- Experience of teaching undergraduate mathematics modules;
- Evidence of effectiveness of academic teaching and of excellence in teaching to large classes;
- Excellent verbal and written skills in English.
For appointment as Lecturer:
- An interest in mathematics education through a record of engagement with the scholarship of undergraduate teaching, learning and assessment in mathematics;
- A commitment to pursuing innovative teaching and assessment strategies that enhance student engagement and success.
For appointment as Senior Lecturer:
- Research output in mathematics and/or on the scholarship of undergraduate teaching, learning and assessment in mathematics;
- Evidence of effective innovative teaching and assessment strategies that enhance student engagement and success.
