Appointment is on the joint establishment of Stellenbosch University and the Western Cape Government, Department of Health, on the conditions of service of the University.
Job Description
Duties:
Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty and the Chief Executive Officer, Tygerberg Hospital, respectively, the incumbent's duties will include:
- Overall strategic leadership and operational management of the Department on behalf of the Faculty and Tygerberg Hospital, giving expression to its vision of becoming a world-class centre for training, teaching and learning, clinical service, research and innovation in medicine;
- Fostering an inclusive and collegial environment that encourages a high level of performance, communication and teamwork;
- Operational management of human resources and finances of the Department; Clinical governance and participating in clinical service delivery commitments of the Department, including commuted overtime at Tygerberg Hospital, clinical service supervision, and leadership;
- Overall responsibility for teaching and learning, which includes guidance and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Department of Medicine across the Faculty's distributed training platform;
- Overall responsibility for teaching and learning, which includes leading and guiding curriculum development and assessments;
- Guiding, mentoring and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students across the Acting as an external examiner and moderator of undergraduate and postgraduate examination papers, theses and dissertations;
- Assuming overall responsibility for research and innovation, which includes leading, mentoring and participating in the design, execution, supervision, publication and translation of research in priority areas;
- Initiating, leading and conducting independent research that leads to publications in peer-reviewed journals and successful application of research grants;
- Collaborating and participating in scientific and professional organisations and interdepartmental activities through innovative networking;
- Actively participating in the internationalisation efforts of the University;
- Contributing to the goals and functioning of the University and the Health Department through active involvement in the senior management structures of the University and the Western Cape Provincial Government;
- Expanding and strengthening collaboration with health services, communities and other stakeholders.
Inherent Criteria
Requirements:
- A doctoral degree or advanced stage of completing a doctorate (for appointment at Professor level) in medicine;
- A relevant postgraduate qualification in medicine, which may include an MMed degree or college qualification;
- Registration or registrable with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a specialist in medicine;
- Proven management experience at an executive/senior level within an academic environment and clinical service setting;
- Proven national and international academic and specialist stature and recognition;
- Proven expertise and experience in curriculum development, planning and implementation in the health sciences;
- Proven ability to provide quality teaching and assessment and to promote independent learning for students using innovative and creative methods at undergraduate and postgraduate (master’s) level;
- A proven track record of independent research and guidance of research with publications and related research outputs commensurate with the expected outputs of a professor / associate professor, including a record of successfully securing research grants;
- A proven record of specialist participation in seminars or invitations as guest speaker at conferences indicating academic standing;
- The ability to organise, take initiative and act as leader at departmental level.
Recommendation:
- Successful PhD supervision;
- Experience in teaching, learning and assessment, which includes guidance and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as faculty development;
- NRF rating;
- A fellowship qualification in a sub-speciality in one of the disciplines of medicine
