The Physiotherapy Division, situated in the Department of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at Stellenbosch University (SU), wishes to appoint an academic to contribute to teaching, research for impact, research dissemination and clinical service delivery within the field of neurology and / or medical and surgical rehabilitation. The position also incorporates course convening, curriculum renewal activities, and academic administration. Clinical service delivery will be linked to a public healthcare facility in the Cape Metropolitan area.

Appointment is made on the joint establishment of Stellenbosch University and the Western Cape Provincial Government.

Job Description

Duties:

Teaching and administration

  • Undergraduate (and postgraduate) teaching in neurology, or medical and surgical rehabilitation and related subject areas;
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate research supervision in the focus areas of the Division, Department and Faculty;
  • Clinical supervision of undergraduate students on the health services training platform;
  • Actively involved in the design, development, and implementation of undergraduate teaching modules in neurology, or medical and surgical rehabilitation and related subject areas as part of programme alignment and revision activities;
  • Teaching and learning administration, including class coordination, module coordination, teaching and case lead / facilitation.

Research

  • Engaging in impactful research activities leading to personal development goals (e.g., PhD, post-doctoral research) and research outputs in line with designated targets set by the Division;
  • Engaging in divisional and departmental research initiatives (e.g., book chapters, inter-divisional research projects, co-supervision);
  • Actively developing institutional, national and international networks.

Clinical service delivery

  • Directing clinical service rendering at healthcare facilities where an agreement exists with the Physiotherapy Division (e.g., Bishop Lavis Rehabilitation Centre,  Tygerberg Hospital);
  • Providing ethically and culturally sound clinical services as well as accurate record keeping in line with the healthcare facility's standards and practices.

Inherent Criteria

Requirements:

Minimum requirements for a Senior Lecturer

  • PhD;
  • Evidence of any research outputs;
  • At least four years’ higher education teaching experience in neurology and / or medical and surgical rehabilitation;
  • Experience in postgraduate research supervision on at least master’s  ;
  • Clinical supervision experience in the subject area of neurology or medical and surgical rehabilitation or related subject areas;
  • At least two years’ post-community service clinical experience, predominately in the teaching areas;
  • Registered / registrable with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a physiotherapist.

Minimum requirements for a Lecture

  • Master’s degree;
  • Experience in teaching (as educator, tutor, or assistant) in neurology or medical and surgical rehabilitation or related areas;
  • Any clinical supervision experience in physiotherapy;
  • At least two years’ post-community service clinical experience predominately in the field;
  • Registered/ registrable with the Health Professional Council of South Africa as a Physiotherapist.

Recommendations for Senior Lecturer

  • Grantsmanship and research output profile (research publications, conferences, etc.);
  • Record of appropriate, regular and recent participation in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses in the field of neurology and / or medical and surgical rehabilitation, with competency certificates as proof;
  • Proven participation in multi-/ inter-/ transdisciplinary teamwork activities; Membership of and participation in professional associations.

Recommendations for Lecturer

  • PhD;
  • Record of appropriate, regular and recent participation in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses in the subject field of neurology / medical and surgical rehabilitation with competency certificates as proof;
  • Research outputs;
  • Proven participation in multi-/ inter-/ transdisciplinary teamwork activities.
