The North-West University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the following position, which form part of the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). Preference will be given to applications from black (African, Coloured and Indian), female and disabled candidates, with a target that at least 80% of applicants should be appointed from these groups. Applicants must be SA citizens and 40 years or younger of age. The nGAP represents the ninth phase of the Staffing South African Universities Framework (SSAUF), which the Minister of Higher Education and Training approved at the start of 2015 as an initiative to improve the academic staffing capacity of South African universities. The programme aims at addressing the urgent and challenging imperative to recruit, support and retain black (African, Coloured and Indian), female academic and disabled staff to address the under-representation at all levels in the sector. It is a key vehicle to contribute to the transformation of the academic staff profile in disciplines of greatest need. nGAP employees will participate in a six-year developmental programme in terms of which they will be employed on a permanent full-time basis at the NWU under the University's normal conditions of service. They will be expected to register for and complete their doctoral studies, participate successfully in the DHET's Staffing South Africa's Universities Development Programme, and work under the supervision of an appointed mentor. In order to achieve the developmental aims of the programme, nGAP employees will have a reduced teaching load over the first four years of their appointment. They will be expected to work for additional two years at NWU after the completion of the six-year developmental programme. In order to achieve the developmental aims of the programme, nGAP employees will have a reduced teaching load over the first three years of their appointment.
Job Description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
TEACHING:
- Years 1-3: Be responsible for at least one undergraduate module in the SEECE,
- Year 4 onwards: Be responsible for at least two undergraduate modules in the SEECE plus undergraduate projects, as per the annual task agreement.
FINAL YEAR SUPERVISION:
- Years 1-3: Limited to own development,
- Year 4 onwards: Progressively more research in a research group associated with the school, including post graduate study supervision, as per the annual task agreement.
RESEARCH:
- Completion of own post graduate study and research experience
- Professional body registration
- SSAU-DP participation
SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION:
- As required / per task agreement
Inherent Criteria
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s in Engineering (B Eng / BSc Eng) in Electrical Engineering / Electronic Engineering / Computer Engineering / Mechatronic Engineering / Electromechanical Engineering
- Any Masters in Engineering or a Masters in a related field e.g. Mathematics. A Masters in the field of the Bachelor’s degree will be preferred.
- The Master's degree must be achieved with an average of 70% or above. Please attach proof of results in your application.
- Applicants must be SA citizens and 40 years or younger of age.
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE COMPETENCIES:
- Registerable with ECSA as Candidate Engineer
- SAIEE or IEEE or similar membership
KEY FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:
- Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), email and internet
- Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance
- Research methodology and technical writing
- A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students’ educational development and wellbeing.
- Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g., whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment
