The Department of Information Science is seeking to fill a position to increase its teaching and research capacity. The Department’s research and teaching focus is on the interface between information technology and various social systems, including the development, adoption, and effects of digital technologies in personal, organisational, and societal contexts. We aim to equip students to meet the diverse challenges brought on by the advancement of information technology and digitalisation. The rapid change in these technologies and the various ways in which they mediate interaction practices call for an interdisciplinary approach, and applicants should be open to new research and teaching challenges. Job Description

Duties:

  • Teaching, postgraduate supervision, research, and community interaction in one or more of the following academic domains:

Social and organisational informatics;

Information systems;

Information systems analysis and design;

Human-computer interaction;

Software application development.

  • Teaching, including programme and curriculum development, preparing new teaching material, presenting existing or new teaching material, evaluating students, and managing tutors;
  • Research, including executing a research agenda, choosing appropriate methods, collaborating with other researchers, obtaining any needed funding, executing the research, and successful publication of the results;
  • Student supervision, including providing guidance in all phases of student research projects;
  • Community interaction, including any efforts required to disseminate research and other knowledge into the broader South African community, for example, via schools, the government, companies, etc.;
  • Administrative and management duties as required by the Department

Inherent Criteria

Requirements:

  • A completed doctoral degree in a relevant academic domain;

For Associate Professor: At least eight years’  relevant academic experience; 

For Professor:  At least fifteen years’ relevant academic experience.

  • Demonstrated research experience in one or more of the listed domains, with particular emphasis on the application of information and communication technologies in business/organisational settings. 

For Associate Professor:

  • Proof of national and international standing as researcher;
  • An extensive track-record of publications in high-ranking international journals for which the candidate is the first or senior author on a significant proportion;
  • An extensive track record of participation in and publication at important international conferences;
  • Proof of external funding obtained for research;
  • Editorial and programme committee appointments at notable publication outlets or conferences.

For Professor: The same requirements as listed for Associated Professor; as well as proof of status as an international leader in their field as evidenced by awards received, funding obtained, keynote presentations at prestigious events or conferences, and invitations to high-ranking institutions.

  • Demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in one or more of the listed domains.

For Associate Professor: Proven excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and evidence of academic leadership in programme and curriculum development;

For Professor: The same requirements as listed for Associated Professor; as well as a long track record of programme and curriculum development and leadership experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

  • Demonstrated experience in postgraduate supervision.

For Associate Professor: Supervision experience at both master’s and doctoral levels, with evidence of completed projects and publications produced based on theses/dissertations;

For Professor: Supervision experience at both master’s and doctoral levels, with an extensive track record of completed projects and publications produced based on theses/dissertations.

  • Demonstrated experience in administration and management functions in higher education contexts. 

For Associate Professor: Evidence of appointment to and excellence in leadership positions at departmental level, and participation in Faculty committees;

For Professor: The same requirements as listed for Associated Professor; as well as an extensive track-record of leadership positions held at departmental and Faculty committee levels, and in academic bodies/communities at national /international level.

  • Proven experience in the initiation and management of academia-industry partnerships and a track-record of involvement in community interaction and/or social impact projects.

Recommendations:

  • Industry experience relevant to one or more of the listed academic domains;
  • An established network of international research collaborators with proven research outputs;
  • International academic experience as demonstrated by appointments or fellowships at academic institutions outside South Africa;
  • An NRF rating.
