Background to Position

WSU has a Divisional Management System and is managed as a unitary institution with an Institutional Office and four campuses. Campuses are operated as business units within the Institution, with the Campus Rector as the academic and administrative head responsible for promoting quality education, research and community engagement and the provision of academic and administrative leadership at a campus level. The Campus Rector will actively support the Vice-Chancellor and Principal in the leadership and management of the University. The Campus Rector is accountable for the day-to-day management and administration of the Campus and must ensure that the University's processes, policies, systems, rules, and procedures are consistently applied. 

Job Description

  • Establish an enabling environment at the campus level, with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to support the academic portfolio.

  • Operations management for the following portfolios at campus level: o Teaching and learning

    o Research o Community engagement o Library and information services o Student administration and governance o Student affairs o Human resources o Finance o ICT; and o Facilities

  • Quality assurance and risk management.

  • Lead and inspire staff and provide clear direction through a period of transition.

  • Manage transformation to ensure the internalisation of an organisational and

    performance culture that supports the strategic imperatives of WSU.

  • Stakeholder relations management and partnerships.

  • Performance management, including academic staff learning and development.

  • Budget/financial and asset management.

  • Monitoring, evaluation and reporting.

Inherent Criteria

  • A Doctoral degree.

  • An outstanding academic leader, preferably with an established research track record

  • At least 5 years experience in a senior leadership role in a university.

  • Has a track record for managing a complex portfolio, running a unit of a reasonable size.

  • Has the ability to mobilise and inspire others towards shared goals.

  • The ability to maintain and strengthen synergies amongst the different campuses in the interest of the Institution's unity.

  • Has an understanding of the higher education environment, the relevant legislation and key international trends.

  • Understands the operations and affairs of a university environment.

  • Can think strategically and operationalise this into plans and projects.

  • A good understanding and experience in change management implementation.
