Background to Position

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking to appoint a permanent, full-time academic from the designated group at the Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level, from across the engineering discipline, including materials science. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching, administration, and research in the Department. We invite suitably qualified persons to apply for this position. 

Job Description

Requirements:

For both levels:

  • A BSc (Eng), BEng, or BSc (Hons) in Materials Science;
  • Demonstrable teaching and research link between the applicant’s disciplinary field and the activities of the Department;
  • and Demonstrable recent experience of teaching in higher education at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.

For appointment at Lecturer level:

  • Registered for a PhD in engineering or materials science and within 18 months of submission for examination.

For appointment at Senior Lecturer level:

  • A PhD in engineering or materials science; and
  • A growing reputation in the field, as demonstrated by accredited publications and/or professional contributions.

The following will be advantageous:

                        • A track record of research projects, securing funding and accredited research publications;
                        • Experience in management (of courses, staff and/or research projects);
                        • Experience of teaching and supervision in the South African context;
                        • Contributions to curriculum development at course or programme level;
                        • Compliance with the criteria for registration as a Professional Engineer; and
                        • Postdoctoral research experience, or relevant work experience in engineering industry and/or academia. 

                        Inherent Criteria

                        The successful candidate is expected to:

                        • Teach students, develop course material and contribute to excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching;
                        • Conduct research, supervise students, publish in refereed journals, and contribute to excellence in research in the Department; and
                        • Contribute to the Department’s social responsiveness by engaging with community and/or industry through teaching and research.

                        The 2020 annual cost of employment, including benefits, for Senior Lecturer is R887 294 and for Lecturer is R730 510. The 2021 annual remuneration packages are still to be confirmed.
