Job Description
Duties:
The incumbent will be responsible for:
- Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in Afrikaans Home Language teaching (specialisation in literature), with both primary and high school focus;
- Engaging in research in Afrikaans Home Language teaching and related fields;
- Publishing research in reputable academic and peer-reviewed journals;
- Supervising postgraduate students in Afrikaans Home Language teaching and related fields;
- Participating in social impact projects in Afrikaans Home Language teaching, and rendering appropriate services to the University and teaching community;
- Contributing to academic administration and leadership in the discipline, Department and Faculty.
Inherent Criteria
Requirements:
- A relevant South African qualification to teach Afrikaans;
- Afrikaans literature and / or Applied Afrikaans Language Studies at third year university level or equivalent qualification;
- Excellent spoken and written language proficiency in Afrikaans;
- Appropriate teaching experience;
- Knowledge of Afrikaans language education in the intermediate, senior and FET phases within the CAPS education policy;
- Appropriate school teaching experience;
- The ability to teach and assess in Afrikaans;
- A good working knowledge of a second official South African language.
- Senior Lecturer: A relevant PhD with literature and / or (Applied) Linguistics as core element. Experience of teaching Afrikaans in higher education context. Experience of postgraduate supervision at postgraduate level in language education. Research and publication in chosen areas of specialisation, and relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Lecturer: A relevant master’s degree with literature or (Applied) Linguistics as core element. Approved publishing schedule. Demonstrable ability of research and publications in peer-reviewed journals. The ability to supervise and co-supervise postgraduate students.
Recommendations:
- A PhD or proof of registration or proposal for PhD (if not in possession of PhD yet) on lecturer level position;
- Experience in and or knowledge of Applied Linguistics or Applied Afrikaans Language Studies;
- Deep-seated interest in and knowledge of current South African education policies;
- Experience and / or knowledge of technology-aided language education and a basic knowledge of a second additional official South African language.
