The Department of General Linguistics at Stellenbosch University (SU) is committed to excellence in teaching and supervision, high-impact research, and effective community interaction involving the application of theoretical insights to linguistic phenomena in the South African, as well as the international context. The Department has a strong international research profile in the areas of formal linguistics, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and sign language studies (see www.sun.ac.za/linguist). Taking as point of departure the Department's location in the Western Cape and on the African continent, our research focuses on multilingual contexts to enhance our scientific understanding of language. We work collaboratively on research projects with local and international institutions, both on the continent and overseas.
Job Description
Duties:
- Teaching and coordinating undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
- Postgraduate supervision (at Honours, Master’s, and PhD level for lecturer; at Honours and Master’s level for junior lecturer);
- Conducting research in a field aligned to one of the Department's focus areas in Linguistics;
- Actively participating in the research, teaching, and social impact activities of the Department;
- Performing administrative tasks associated with these activities.
Inherent Criteria
Requirements:
For appointment as lecturer:
- PhD in Linguistics (with focus on syntax, morphology, phonology, or phonetics);
- Proven ability to teach in the areas of syntax, morphology, phonology, or phonetics at tertiary level;
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in coordinating, developing, and strengthening the academic project of the Department;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
For appointment as junior lecturer:
- MA in Linguistics (with focus on syntax, morphology, phonology, or phonetics);
- Strong academic record;
- Teaching experience in the areas of syntax, morphology, phonology, or phonetics at tertiary level;
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in coordinating, developing, and strengthening the academic project of the Department;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to present a lecture to demonstrate their knowledge and communication skills.
Recommendations:
- Accredited academic publications;
- Experience in intra- or interdisciplinary research collaborations;
- Fluency in an official South African language other than English.

The position is structured as a 12-month-contract and includes the standard university benefits policy. Contract renewal is based on continued funding for the post.
