Two vacancies will become available in the Department of Civil Engineering at Stellenbosch University (SU).  The Department trains a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate students, and has unique laboratory facilities for research in the various fields of Water Engineering. This appointment is aimed at supporting this research area through teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the areas of Water Engineering.

Job Description

Duties:

  • With reference to the various subdisciplines of Water Engineering, the incumbent will be expected to:
  • Teach and develop undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
  • Conduct top-level research and publish findings in international peer-reviewed journals;
  • Supervise and guide research work of undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  • Generate funding in support of this research activity, including bursaries, laboratory maintenance, and other expenses;
  • Perform academic and departmental administration.

Inherent Criteria

Requirements: 

Lecturer:

  • An applicable BEng or BScEng degree enabling professional registration as Professional Engineer (Civil) with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA);
  • A background in

(a) Water and Wastewater Treatment, or 

(b) Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering,

with EITHER an appropriate PhD in Engineering from an accredited national or international tertiary institution in a field closely aligned with the required background,

OR an appropriate MEng/MSc degree with at least three years’ proven experience in industry with a focus closely aligned with the required background;

  • Demonstrated research track record;
  • An excellent academic study record in Engineering;
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Senior Lecturer:

  • An applicable BEng or BScEng degree enabling professional registration as Professional Engineer (Civil) with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA);
  • A background in

(a) Water and Wastewater Treatment, or 

(b) Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering, 

with EITHER an appropriate PhD in Engineering from an accredited national or international tertiary institution in a field closely aligned with the required background, and with at least five years’ proven experience in a tertiary education / research environment,

OR an appropriate MEng/MSc degree with at least eight years’ proven experience in industry with a focus closely aligned with the required background;

  • Research track record demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and postgraduate supervision;
  • An excellent academic study record in Engineering;
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Associate Professor:

  • An applicable BEng or BScEng degree enabling professional registration as Professional Engineer (Civil) with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA);
  • Active registration as Professional Engineer (Civil) with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA);
  • A background in

(a) Water and Wastewater Treatment, or 

(b) Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering, with 

an appropriate PhD in Engineering from an accredited national or international tertiary institution in a field closely aligned with the required background, and with at least eight years’ proven experience in a tertiary education / research environment;

  • Research track record demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and postgraduate supervision;
  • An excellent academic study record in Engineering;
  • Good interpersonal, organisational and leadership skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

Recommendations:

  • Previous tertiary teaching experience, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • A record in establishing or operating an externally funded research environment;
  • A high level of independence and self-motivation;
  • The ability or experience to function in a multidisciplinary environment.
