The Department of Mathematical Sciences in the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University (SU) consists of three divisions: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science.  The Applied Mathematics Division is responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Applied Mathematics. Currently, the Applied Mathematics research areas include: machine learning and computer vision, numerical analysis and scientific computing, fluid dynamics and modelling, computational mechanics, dynamical systems, and applied discrete mathematics.

The focus of this appointment is undergraduate teaching.

Job Description

Duties:

  • Teaching a range of undergraduate Applied Mathematics modules offered as part of programmes in the Faculty of Science, as well as service modules in other faculties.
  • Engaging with academic renewal of curriculum, assessment and student support initiatives in undergraduate Applied Mathematics.
  • Teaching and coordinating undergraduate Applied Mathematics modules with large enrolments.
  • Fulfilling administration duties in the Applied Mathematics Division

Inherent Criteria

Requirements:

  • MSc in Applied Mathematics or a closely related field, at the time of application.
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate Applied Mathematics modules.
  • Evidence of effectiveness of academic teaching and of excellence in teaching to large classes.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English.

Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to give a presentation to demonstrate their knowledge and communication skills.

  • An interest in Applied Mathematics education through a record of engagement with the scholarship of undergraduate teaching, learning and assessment in Applied Mathematics.
