The Department of Chemical Engineering at Stellenbosch University (SU) offers an outstanding undergraduate programme in chemical engineering and undertakes impactful, innovative research that is recognised internationally. The Department wishes to appoint an academic who can provide a strong academic contribution and can develop further in the field of data analytics and machine learning techniques applied in the context of chemical engineering process monitoring, control and optimisation. The incumbent will be appointed in accordance with the regulations of the new Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) and will be required to complete a PhD if they do not yet hold a doctoral qualification.
Job Description
Duties:
- Teaching and administration of undergraduate chemical engineering modules.
- Execution of fundamental and applied research, focused on the research areas related to data analytics and machine learning techniques applied in the context of chemical engineering process monitoring, control and optimisation, both independently and in collaboration with existing research groups within the Department.
- Supervision of final year research projects as well as postgraduate researchers in the research areas listed above.
- Technology transfer to the industry and broader community.
- Performing support, administrative and representative roles in the Department.
Inherent Criteria
For Lecturer, in addition to the requirements for Junior Lecturer:
- A doctoral degree in chemical engineering from a reputable university and previous tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, OR
- At least three years’ technical or research experience in industry in a relevant field of expertise, with a proven ability to plan and conduct projects independently.
Recommendations:
- Registration as a professional engineer with ECSA.
- Evidence of research outputs such as published peer-reviewed journal articles.
- An NRF rating as a young researcher.
