The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University (SU) offers leading educational and research programmes in the fields of data engineering and machine learning. A Junior Lecturer position has become available in the Department in these fields and the Department is therefore looking for an excellent candidate to fill this position. In these fields the Department has well-established research laboratories as well as teaching and engineering infrastructure.
The position is aimed to appoint a young (less than 40 years), BCIA or female South African citizen. If the incumbent does not already have a PhD, they will have to register for their PhD (part-time) in the Department of Electrical and Electronic (Stellenbosch University) at the first available opportunity after joining the Department.
The incumbent will be appointed in accordance with the regulations of the new Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), and will be required to complete a PhD. The position comes with substantial support from the DHET. The appointment is also subject to the conditions as set by the DHET and must be read in conjunction with the nGAP requirements of the DHET (see www.dhet.gov.za/SSAUF).
Job Description
Duties:
- Teaching and administration of general undergraduate modules and specialised undergraduate and postgraduate modules in artificial intelligence, data engineering and machine learning.
- Supervising final year engineering projects and postgraduate (typically Masters and PhD) students in the field of artificial intelligence, data engineering and machine learning. Supervision of PhD students is only required if the incumbent has already obtained an appropriate PhD qualification.
- Performing basic and/or applied research focused on relevant research areas within artificial intelligence, data engineering and machine learning.
- Collaborating with existing research partners within the Department and building contacts with other universities, industry and government organisations to promote research and development programmes in the artificial intelligence, data engineering and machine learning fields at Stellenbosch University.
- Performing supportive, administrative and representative roles within and outside the Department.
Inherent Criteria
Requirements:
- An applicable bachelor’s degree (typically BEng or BScEng) in electrical and electronic engineering, as required by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) to qualify for registration as a professional engineer.
- An appropriate Masters degree (typically MEng or MScEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering for which a final mark of at least 70% was obtained, from a recognised academic university.
- The candidate must qualify to register for a PhD degree in electrical and electronic engineering by February 2026 at the latest and graduate within five years.
- The ability to communicate clearly in at least English.
- The ability to teach courses and modules as part of the typical undergraduate engineering programme as described in the duties above.
- Solid knowledge of and experience in the field of artificial intelligence, machine learning, data engineering or data science.
- A strong academic track-record.
- Good interpersonal and organisational skills.
- Proven research skills.
Recommendations:
- Registration as a professional engineer.
- Previous tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels.
- A PhD qualification, or in an advanced stage of PhD study, at an accredited national or international tertiary institution in the fields of artificial intelligence, data engineering and/or machine learning.
- The ability to function in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Preference will be given to South African citizens from the designated groups.
