The purpose of this position is to provide a comprehensive range of legal services as mandated by the University, including legal risk management, litigation, legal representation in dispute resolution forums and tribunals, policy drafting, contract review, and the provision of legal opinions and advice. The role also provides strategic leadership and expert legal counsel on all labour and employment law matters, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, mitigating legal and organisational risk, and promoting effective employee relations, good governance, and sound institutional decision-making.

Key Performance Areas:

• Academic excellence and effectiveness: Legal advice and corporate governance, litigation and dispute resolution, contract management, policy management, legal compliance
• Strategy development, implementation, and governance: Promote sound corporate governance, monitor and report on operational initiatives and legislative compliance, ensure policy development and implementation, compile reports to Council and committees, participate in institutional governance structures, identify and mitigate risks, maintain proper record-keeping, implement departmental strategy aligned with CODeL+ 2030 Strategy
• Financial stewardship and sustainability: Ensure SCM policy compliance, manage cost containment, prepare and manage departmental budget, manage finances in area of responsibility
• Stakeholder focus: Engage stakeholders, conduct consultations and presentations, develop templates for legal instruments, develop standard operating legal procedures, provide training and capacity building, ensure client satisfaction
• People focus: Implement personal and staff development plans, supervise staff, conduct research and publications, engage in community engagement
