Job Description

Duties:

  • Responsible for the overall executive management, as well as for providing visionary leadership aligned with the institutional strategy.
  • Responsible for the strategic management, as well as leadership and guidance of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, in the areas of teaching and learning, research, internationalisation, innovation and social impact.
  • Promoting opportunities that unlock research funding.
  • Promoting research excellence, research translation, establishing externally funded chairs, and supporting recruitment and the retention of talent as part of research capacity building.
  • Promoting interdisciplinary excellence and transdisciplinary research with different research entities.
  • Enhancing the Faculty’s academic reputation and reach through external partnerships and collaborations with academic, business, and professional entities, both nationally and internationally.
  • Responsible for driving the Faculty’s transformation agenda to promote diversity within the Faculty.
  • Collaborating with the University’s leadership to drive the overall institutional agenda, and sharing responsibility for the broader University management.
  • Responsible for the sustainable financial management of the Faculty and the management of resources and fundraising as needed.
  • Providing guidance, direct marketing, and overseeing strategic enrolment management.
  • Providing leadership and management with regards to all student and staff matters including their wellness.

Inherent Criteria

Requirements: 

  • Strong academic credentials with national / international recognition and eligibility for appointment as professor, preferably in an academic department within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.
  • Proven track record of strategic leadership and successfully leading teams towards shared objectives.
  • Comprehensive understanding and insight about the higher education sector and research funding landscape.
  • Senior management experience at faculty and institutional levels at a higher education institution.
  • Demonstrated experience to promote excellence in academic quality and research significance.
  • Sound communication, interpersonal and liaison skills with the ability to positively engage students, Faculty and staff.
  • A track record of promoting diversity and transformation, including the ability to function in a multicultural and multilingual environment.
  • Evidence of relationship building and management of recognised national and international networks.
  • Evidence of values-based leadership aligned to Stellenbosch University’s core values.

Recommendations:

  • At least five years’ experience at senior management level.
  • Experience of promoting of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and fundraising.
  • Experience of engagement with professional bodies and / or the private / public sector.
  • Term of appointment: Five years with the possibility of reappointment for another term.
