Job overview

Duties:

  • Teaching and coordinating undergraduate and postgraduate modules
  • Postgraduate supervision at honours, master’s, and PhD level
  • Conducting research in a field aligned to one of the Department’s focus areas in Linguistics
  • Actively participating in the research, teaching, and social impact activities of the Department
  • Performing administrative tasks associated with these activities

Requirements

  • PhD (completed) in Linguistics
  • Experience in teaching syntax/morphology and/or phonology/phonetics, as well as other sub-disciplines of linguistics, at tertiary level
  • Evidence of readiness to supervise at postgraduate level
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in coordinating, developing, and strengthening the academic project of the Department
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Only South African citizens from the designated groups will be considered for appointment

Stellenbosch University’s Department of General Linguistics is committed to excellence in teaching and supervision, high-impact research, and effective community interaction involving the application of theoretical insights to linguistic phenomena in the South African and international context. The Department has a strong international research profile in the areas of formal linguistics, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and sign language studies. Taking as point of departure the Department’s location in the Western Cape and on the African continent, research focuses on multilingual contexts to enhance scientific understanding of language, with collaborative work on research projects with local and international institutions.
