Provide inclusive academic, strategic and operational leadership for the Division, positioning it as a leading African and internationally connected centre for teaching, research, postgraduate training, policy engagement and socially responsive scholarship.

  • Develop and implement a clear academic and research strategy aligned with the priorities of the Department, Faculty and University
  • Lead and strengthen undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in health ethics, bioethics, health law, health humanities, social medicine and related fields
  • Ensure the quality, relevance, coordination and continued development of the Division’s teaching contributions across the health-professions curricula
  • Advance curriculum innovation and transformation, including culturally responsive, person-centred and socially accountable approaches to health-professions education
  • Build a productive, interdisciplinary and internationally visible programme of research and scholarly output
  • Strengthen postgraduate supervision, research training and mentoring of early-career academics
  • Develop competitive research, educational and policy initiatives and secure external funding and strategic partnerships
  • Promote collaboration across departments, faculties, health services, communities, professional bodies, and local and international institutions
  • Advance public scholarship, community engagement and policy engagement relevant to health, healthcare, health ethics and society
  • Foster an inclusive, collegial and intellectually vibrant environment in which diverse disciplinary perspectives can flourish
  • Manage the Division’s staff, resources, performance and academic administration responsibly and in accordance with University policies
  • Contribute to departmental, Faculty and University governance, as well as appropriate professional and academic service

Requirements

  • Primary degree in a health sciences profession
  • Active HPCSA registration
  • PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in health ethics, bioethics, or philosophy
  • Academic standing appropriate for appointment at associate professor or professor level
  • Established record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and evidence of educational leadership
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum design, review, implementation and quality assurance
  • Successful supervision of postgraduate students, including master’s and doctoral candidates
  • Sustained record of high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarly publications and evidence of an active research programme
  • Demonstrated track record as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on research grants, and development of educational or policy initiatives
  • Demonstrated academic leadership and experience in administration, people management, or programme leadership
  • Strong record of interdisciplinary collaboration and capacity to provide balanced leadership across the Division’s full mandate
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated commitment to collegiality, inclusion and academic integrity

About the institution

Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University is internationally recognised for excellence in teaching, research and innovation in medicine and the health sciences. The Division of Health Ethics, Humanities and Society within the Department of Global Health contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate education, interdisciplinary research, curriculum development, policy engagement and public scholarship across medicine, rehabilitation sciences, public health and the broader health professions.

The Division’s expanded mandate brings together established strengths in health ethics and bioethics with health law, health humanities, social medicine, the social sciences in health, culturally responsive and person-centred healthcare, and interdisciplinary health-professions education.
