Job overview

Duties:

  • Teaching various modules on the undergraduate and postgraduate SPL programmes.
  • Supervising honours, master’s and PhD students’ research projects.
  • Contributing to doctoral training and research capacity development within the SPL.
  • Identifying and initiating research projects, including participation in existing research projects.
  • Pursuing funding opportunities locally and internationally through research and short course initiatives.
  • Performing administration and assessment responsibilities related to allocated teaching modules.
  • Involvement in or leading programme and module development within the School.
  • Engagement in social impact, community engagement and/or outreach initiatives.

Requirements:

For appointment at Associate Professor level:

  • PhD in public development management or public administration, or monitoring and evaluation, or a related field awarded by a recognised university.
  • Evidence of national and international recognition as a researcher, for example through the attainment of an NRF rating and peer reviews.
  • Evidence of academic leadership in a subject domain which may include a reasonable number of sole and/or first authored papers, evidence of publications in high impact or highly ranked journals, and the impact of the applicant’s own work as reflected in h-indices such as Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science. This requirement may be interpreted in an environment-specific context based on well-established norms and practices.
  • Specialisation in the field of public policy and monitoring and evaluation as evidenced by the existing teaching portfolio and published research papers.
  • Six subsidy-bearing publication based upon all credit-worthy academic output.
  • Evidence of sustained research productivity.
  • International and national conference participation.
  • Evidence of a successfully completed PhD and master’s degree supervision.
  • A teaching portfolio reflecting quantitative and qualitative teaching performance which displays evidence of the scholarship of teaching relevant to the level of the academic rank.
  • External service-rendering and social impact relevant to the academic rank.

For appointment at Professor Level:

  • PhD in public development management, or public administration, or monitoring and evaluation, or a related field awarded by a recognised university.
  • Evidence of national and international recognition as a researcher, for example through the attainment of an NRF rating of A, B or C and peer reviews.
  • Specialisation in the field of public policy and monitoring and evaluation as evidenced by the existing teaching portfolio and published research papers.
  • At least ten subsidy bearing credits accrued through sole and/or first authored papers in high impact or highly ranked journals. Furthermore, the impact of the applicant’s own work as reflected in h-indices such as Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science. This requirement will be interpreted in an environment-specific context based on well-established norms and practices.
  • Evidence of sustained research productivity.
  • Evidence of international and national conference participation.
  • Evidence of a successfully completed PhD and master’s degree supervision.
  • A teaching portfolio reflecting quantitative and qualitative teaching performance which displays evidence of the scholarship of teaching, as well as evidence of teaching- and learning leadership, relevant to the level of the academic rank.

The School of Public Leadership (SPL) at Stellenbosch University (SU) is unique in the South African context with its combination of Public Policy and Management, and Environment and Sustainability as strategic focus areas. Reporting directly to the Director of the SPL, this role involves academic leadership and research that supports and ensures the delivery of a transformative learning experience aligned with the SPL’s strategic vision.
