Job overview

Duties:

  • Provide academic leadership in agribusiness and farm management teaching, research, and strategic initiatives commensurate with appointment level
  • Design and deliver modules in agribusiness management, farm management, production economics, financial management, and applied economic analysis
  • Advance research in agribusiness, farm-level decision-making, value chain management, and agricultural competitiveness, publishing in accredited journals
  • Build interdisciplinary collaborations with industry stakeholders, agribusiness firms, financial institutions, and value chain partners
  • Source and manage local and international research projects, including stakeholder engagement and fundraising
  • Teach and coordinate undergraduate and postgraduate modules in agricultural economics and quantitative methods
  • Supervise honours, master’s and doctoral students, and co-supervise with collaborators

Requirements:

For the appointment of Junior Lecturer

  • MSc in Agricultural Economics, or a closely related discipline aligned to agribusiness and farm management.
  • Knowledge of farm management, agribusiness management, production economics, and applied economic analysis.
  • Analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret financial, production, and market data to support farm- and value-chain-level decision-making.
  • The abillity to conduct farm-level financial analysis, budgeting, risk management, value chain analysis, and decision-support tools.
  • The ability and willingness to participate in an active teaching programme in agricultural economics and related quantitative modules, within a tertiary education context.
  • Language proficiency suitable for a multilingual university.
  • The ability to demonstrate and uphold the core values of Stellenbosch University (SU).
  • The ability and willingness to conduct research in farm and agribusiness management and production economics.

For the appointment of Lecturer and Senior Lecturer

  • PhD in Agricultural Economics, or a closely related discipline aligned to agribusiness and farm management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in farm management, agribusiness management, production economics, and applied economic analysis.
  • Proven analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret financial, production, and market data to support farm- and value-chain-level decision-making.
  • The abillity to conduct farm-level financial analysis, budgeting, risk management, value chain analysis, and decision-support tools.
  • The ability or experience to conduct undergraduate teaching in agricultural economics and related quantitative modules within a tertiary education context commensurate with the level of appointment.
  • The ability or experience to conduct postgraduate teaching and supervision/co-supervision, commensurate with the level of appointment.
  • Peer-reviewed publications in agricultural economics, agribusiness, farm management, or related fields, commensurate with the level of appointment.
  • Relevant engagement with the agro-food sector, including industry, government, producer organisations, financial institutions, or civil society.
  • The ability to source and execute collaborative research projects.
  • The ability to participate in multi-disciplinary research teams and strategic initiatives.
  • Language proficiency suitable for a multilingual university.
  • The ability to demonstrate and uphold the core values of Stellenbosch University (SU).

Recommendations: 

  • Knowledge of commodity trading within agro-food systems will be an added advantage.

  • For Lecturer and Senior Lecturer: PhD in Agricultural Economics or closely related discipline aligned to agribusiness and farm management
  • Knowledge of farm management, agribusiness management, production economics, and applied economic analysis
  • Analytical and quantitative skills to interpret financial, production, and market data
  • Ability to conduct farm-level financial analysis, budgeting, risk management, and value chain analysis
  • Ability and willingness to participate in active teaching programme in agricultural economics within tertiary education
  • Language proficiency suitable for multilingual university
  • Ability to demonstrate and uphold core values of Stellenbosch University
  • For Lecturer and Senior Lecturer: Peer-reviewed publications in agricultural economics, agribusiness, or related fields commensurate with appointment level
  • For Lecturer and Senior Lecturer: Relevant engagement with agro-food sector including industry, government, producer organisations, or financial institutions
