Job overview

Duties:

  • Academic responsibility for teaching, learning and assessments of allocated undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of nursing programmes, curriculum review and curriculum building activities.
  • Research supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate (masters and doctoral) students as allocated.
  • Conducting own research, disseminating research outputs and translating knowledge.
  • Providing collaborative leadership to develop and implement a departmental research strategy.
  • Participating in social impact projects, -service delivery, and rendering appropriate services in the institution, Faculty and departmental context where required.
  • Securing research grants and contributing to other revenue streams.
  • Participating in national and international meetings/committees/ conferences/papers/projects.
  • Participating in the internationalisation efforts of the institution and Department.
  • Participating in departmental committee structures and research capacity building.
  • Coaching and mentoring of junior staff.
  • Academic and programme management and administration.
  • Participating and contributing to the quality assurance of the allocated programmes.

Requirements

Requirements:

  • PhD on NQF Level 10 in Nursing.
  • Registration with SANC as a professional nurse and midwife, nurse educator, assessor and moderator. Candidates must be in good standing, with a satisfactory performance record.
  • At least four years’ teaching experience in undergraduate and postgraduate nursing programmes at an academic tertiary institution.
  • Proven experience in curriculum development, planning and programme revisions.
  • Evidence of successful research funding as a primary or co-investigator.
  • Evidence as an external examiner for master’s and doctoral students.
  • Record of successful research supervision of master’s and doctoral students.
  • A track record as an established, independent researcher with publications in accredited scientific journals, including demonstration of first and/or senior authorship and related research outputs.
  • Evidence of participation in national health care and nursing committees, boards, fora and councils.
  • Experience in and evidence of social impact or community engagement activities.

Recommendations:

  • Additional qualification(s) in a clinical nursing programme as registered with the SANC.
  • Demonstrate potential for obtaining an NRF rating.
  • Proven record of securing international research grants.
  • Engagment in international projects.
  • Demonstrated leadership within the current Department or Faculty, including mentoring of junior academics, contribution to transformation initiatives, and service on institutional or national committees.
  • Evidence of community engagement or social impact initiatives that integrate teaching, research, and service in ways that advance public health and nursing practice.
  • Demonstrated excellence and innovation in teaching and learning, including curriculum design, use of contemporary pedagogical approaches, and development of a comprehensive teaching portfolio.
