Job overview

As Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Leading the Department of Psychiatry as an academic and clinical unit within the Faculty of Health Sciences
  • Providing strategic direction and oversight for the Department’s ten divisions and research units
  • Leading the development and delivery of undergraduate teaching in psychiatry for medicine and allied health students including occupational therapy and physiotherapy
  • Overseeing postgraduate training in psychiatry, including registrar and senior registrar training, and sub-specialty training in each division
  • Supervising HPCSA registered training for intern clinical psychologists and postgraduate students
  • Fostering research excellence and supporting staff in obtaining research grants and National Research Foundation ratings
  • Managing clinical service delivery at multiple sites including Groote Schuur Hospital, Valkenberg Hospital, Lentegeur Hospital, Red Cross Children’s War Memorial Hospital, and Alexandra Hospital
  • Implementing a primary care approach across all divisions in line with Faculty and Western Cape Government vision
  • Ensuring effective collaboration between UCT and Western Cape Government Health Services
  • Contributing to the Faculty’s commitment to transformation, research-led excellence, and Afropolitan identity

Requirements

  • Doctorate Degree (PhD or equivalent) in Psychiatry or related field
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in academic psychiatry and clinical practice
  • Registered as a specialist in Psychiatry with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and clinical service delivery
  • Evidence of successful research funding and publication in accredited journals
  • Proven academic leadership and management experience at departmental or faculty level
  • Strong commitment to transformation and equity in higher education and health services
  • Ability to work collaboratively with university and government health services

The Department integrates teaching, research, and clinical services across ten divisions including Addiction Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Intellectual Disability Psychiatry, Neuropsychiatry, General Adult Psychiatry, Psychopharmacology, Psychotherapy, and Public and Community Mental Health.

Groote Schuur Hospital, one of two central hospitals in the Western Cape, has 975 beds and 3,762 staff, offering specialist and sub-specialist services in close partnership with UCT.
