KPA 1) Strategic Leadership and Management of the Teaching and Learning Division

  • Provide leadership in the Teaching and Learning Division by:

a) Displaying a sharp focus on the improvement aims and plans for the Teaching & Learning Division;
b) Seeking and exploiting partnerships that enrich the Teaching & Learning Division;
c) Modelling high performance;
d) Enhancing the division’s image;
e) Effective, efficient and consistent decision-making.

  • Design, review, submit for approval and monitor the division’s annual budget.
  • Approve payments per delegated authority and control expenditure within the division.
  • Oversee and ensure effective people management within the unit through the recruitment, development, recognition and management of employees in the division.
  • Oversee and / or manage projects assigned to the Teaching & Learning Division.
  • Formulate and manage a comprehensive risk management plan for the division and ensure internal controls are in place.
  • Monitor the external consultation activities of employees in the division.
  • Ensure the effective administration of all functions within the portfolio of DVC Teaching & Learning.

KPA 2) Strategy and compliance with the University vision

  • Under the direction of the Vice-Chancellor (VC), participate in the compilation of the strategic vision of the University.
  • Plan, produce, execute and implement the relevant institutional   planning   documents (e.g. strategic, operational and other project plans) as it pertains to the portfolio of the DVC: Teaching & Learning.
  • Report to relevant internal and external structures in the course of managing the Teaching & Learning Division.
  • Contribute to the University’s official Annual Report to the Department of Higher Education & Training (DHET) and report back to the relevant internal structures.
  • Ensure compliance to legislation, regulations, national policy directives and internal policies and procedures.
  • Advise the VC on subsidiary strategies and plans as well as on position papers as it pertains to the portfolio of the DVC: Teaching & Learning.
  • Advise the VC on academic management policies to ensure compliance and effective implementation of institutional strategies; and recommend management procedures to execute policies.
  • Analyse and manage the impact of external dynamics on the Teaching & Learning environment of the University.
  • Direct participation of the Teaching & Learning Division in institutional transformation processes.

KPA 3) Strategic leadership to Faculties

  • Enhance excellence and innovation in the University’s Teaching & Learning by ensuring:

a) The provision of high-quality, responsive academic programmes;
b) Overseeing initiatives aimed at ensuring and enhancing the quality of academic programmes;
c) Overseeing the development of an appropriate programme and qualification mix (PQM) and manage programme accreditations;
d) The generation of non-subsidy income through joint ventures and new knowledge creation;
e) The monitoring and management of student through-put and retention rates and graduate employment rates at an undergraduate level.

KPA 4) Strategic leadership to the Centre for Innovation in Learning & Teaching (CILT) and other teaching and learning advancement centres / units / groups that may be established

  • Enhance excellence and innovation in the University’s teaching and learning through:

a) Student Academic Development and Support;
b) Curriculum development;
c) Academic Staff Development;
d) Support to disabled students;
e) Effective and efficient Writing Centre;
f) Promotion of Scholarship of Teaching & Learning;
g) Manages the DHET Earmarked Grants linked to teaching & learning; E-Learning; and
h) Educational Technology;

KPA 5) Strategic leadership to the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and Industry Liaison section

  • Enhance excellence in the University’s teaching and learning through the provision of Work-Integrated Learning & Industry Liaison for optimal impact on the employability of CUT graduates.

Requirements

Minimum Qualification / Knowledge / Experience

  • A Doctoral-level degree.
  • At least ten years of executive / senior managerial experience in a higher education environment.
  • Academic teaching experience with evidence of excellence in research and teaching.
  • Accredited scholarly publications.
  • Academic credibility as recognised by peers and the business environment.
  • Extensive knowledge in areas of leadership / strategy and research.

Ideal Qualification / Knowledge / Experience

  • In addition to a Doctorate, a qualification in management, or equivalent.
  • NRF-rating as a researcher.
  • Full Professor.

By championing curriculum transformation, technology-enhanced learning, and staff development, this role will be instrumental in positioning CUT as a leading university of technology that responds effectively to the evolving demands of the 21st-century in the higher education landscape and ultimately achieving CUT’s 2030 vision.
