Job overview

Strategy Management

  • Develop and implement strategies and plans to promote the NWU Sport portfolio among internal and external stakeholders
  • Align NWU Sport portfolio strategy to institutional strategy, including student success, transformation, stakeholder engagement, and brand positioning
  • Develop and implement NWU Sport governance frameworks, policies, and guidelines
  • Represent NWU at relevant local, provincial, national, and international sport organisations
  • Provide expert advisory services regarding all NWU sport matters
  • Translate institutional priorities into coherent sport strategy

Development and Enhancement of Sport

  • Drive performance of NWU Sport portfolio across campuses, ensuring alignment with institutional objectives and measurable outcomes
  • Provide strategic oversight of sport codes, including prioritisation, expansion, consolidation, or discontinuation
  • Lead benchmarking and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Develop and manage student athlete development pathways from residence leagues to high-performance sport codes
  • Develop and implement policies, processes, and guidelines for sport codes
  • Manage legislative and regulatory compliance to national and international legislation
  • Develop performance metrics for NWU Sport aligned with Annual Performance Plan targets

Stakeholder Relations and Engagement

  • Develop and strengthen partnerships with relevant local, national, and international stakeholders
  • Collaborate with Development and Fundraising to mobilise resources and enhance income-generation interventions
  • Liaison with Spatial Planning and relevant structures to develop and maintain sport infrastructure
  • Partner with Student Life, Transformation, and People and Culture Division for student sport council and residence league management
  • Collaborate with internal structures to ensure NWU Sport compliance to brand policy and Corporate Identity manual
  • Manage relationships with sport partners, donors, and sponsors
  • Ensure NWU Sport digital platforms are maintained and updated regularly

Resources Management and Optimisation

  • Manage NWU Sport planning and allocation of financial and human resources
  • Develop, implement, and monitor NWU Sport budget ensuring financial sustainability and accountability
  • Recruit, develop, and retain staff, fostering positive and productive work environment
  • Ensure long-term financial sustainability through effective planning, risk management, and resource mobilisation
  • Ensure compliance with university policies, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Oversee processes and systems design, utilisation, effectiveness, and efficiency

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Sport Management, Business, Public Management or related field (NQF Level 9)
  • Minimum 5 years experience at Senior Management level in relevant industry (preferably at a Higher Education Institution)
  • Minimum 8 years overall experience in sport governance, management, and advocacy
  • Strategic alignment of sport portfolio with institutional priorities
  • Sport governance and high-performance systems expertise
  • Portfolio performance management and optimisation capability
  • Financial management and resource allocation expertise
  • Policy development and governance framework design within higher education and sport regulatory environment
  • Data-driven decision-making and performance analytics skills
  • Strategic leadership and oversight of sport programmes and systems
