Job overview

Duties:

  • Teaching and administration of undergraduate chemical engineering modules.
  • Execution of fundamental and applied research, focused on broadening the Department’s research activities in one of its current areas of interest listed above (i.e. extractive metallurgy, machine learning, or separations technology).
  • Supervision of final year research projects as well as postgraduate researchers in the relevant research field.
  • Technology transfer to the industry and broader community.
  • Performing support, administrative and representative roles in the Department.

Requirements

Requirements:

For Lecturer:

  • An applicable four-year bachelor’s degree (such as BEng or BScEng) in chemical engineering from a reputable university, recognised by the Engineering Council of South Africa to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • A doctoral degree in chemical engineering from a reputable university, with research interests related to one of the Department’s current areas of interest listed above (i.e. extractive metallurgy, machine learning, or separations technology).
  • An excellent academic track-record.
  • The ability to teach courses and modules as part of a typical undergraduate chemical engineering programme.
  • Evidence of postgraduate supervision experience, or research outputs such as published peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in at least English, with a good ability to communicate clearly and to present lectures in a structured manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills, high emotional intelligence, and the ability to work effectively independently as well as within a team.

For Senior Lecturer (in addition to the requirements for Lecturer):

  • An established research record in the relevant field of research.
  • Substantial independent tertiary teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, or technical / research experience in industry in a relevant field of expertise.
  • A proven ability to secure research funds and to lead research projects.

Recommendations:

For Lecturer:

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with ECSA.

For Senior Lecturer:

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with ECSA.
  • An NRF rating as a researcher.
  • Appropriate industry experience.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at Stellenbosch University (SU) offers an outstanding undergraduate programme in Chemical Engineering and undertakes impactful, innovative research. The Department wishes to appoint an academic who can provide a strong academic contribution in one of the following research fields directly related to the current research activities of the Department: extractive metallurgy (hydrometallurgy or pyrometallurgy), machine learning, or separations technology.
