Job overview

Key responsibilities include:

  • Teaching Senior Phase IsiXhosa Language Education and Literacy from first to fourth year level in the Bachelor of Education (BEd) undergraduate and PGCE programmes
  • Teaching and learning IsiXhosa as a Home Language and First Additional Language to preservice teachers in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
  • Designing and reviewing curricula or module guides for teacher training in IsiXhosa Education/Curriculum Studies
  • Mentoring postgraduate students in the BEd honours programme specialising in Senior Phase and PGCE language education with their academic research projects
  • Promoting or co-promoting students in their master’s and doctoral research
  • Teaching or co-teaching at least one IsiXhosa-related semester module in the BEd honours programme
  • Publishing research in reputable academic and peer-reviewed journals
  • Actively participating in departmental activities including committee membership, module coordination, and administrative responsibilities

Requirements

  • PhD in Language Education
  • Minimum qualification in either Senior Phase teaching or PGCE majoring in IsiXhosa education
  • Experience in curriculum design at undergraduate and postgraduate levels specifically for IsiXhosa
  • Relevant experience in school and higher education training
  • Experience of supervision in teaching and learning of IsiXhosa or African languages at postgraduate level
  • Advanced level of IsiXhosa education including language structures and conventions
  • Good administrative, interpersonal, and communication skills
